Caulfield student's fundraising success

At MacKillop Education, we are committed to creating a nurturing learning environment where children and young people are respected, they are safe, and their voices are heard.

An example of this is at MacKillop Education Caulfield school, where we have an active and purposeful Student Representative Council (Council).

Each week student leaders gather to consider possible school initiatives. Providing the opportunity for students to demonstrate the principles of student voice and agency, which MacKillop Education value so highly.

Students participating in the Student Representative Council are encouraged to speak and give honest opinions, knowing that everyone will do their best to listen.

“I have enjoyed having a place to speak, with teachers that will listen to my ideas,” says Student Representative Council member Harvey.

Recently, the Council organised and delivered a successful social justice initiative, with the aim of fundraising for Motor Neurone Disease.

There was a Fun Run, personalised key rings, blue fairy floss, even an Ice bucket Challenge and importantly, a call to donate.

Through this, the Student Representative Council raised $900.

All elements of the fundraising campaign were led by the Council. Tim Ware, our Education Support Leader that facilitates the group, was instrumental in supporting the successful commitment by the students in their fundraising efforts.

“I am proud of our students’ contributions to this vital cause. It has been exciting guiding them, watching them freely share their ideas and volunteer to take on responsibilities. We have several younger students on the Council this year and it is inspiring seeing our socially aware young leaders develop,” Ware says.

The work done by the Student Representative Council to fundraise for Motor Neurone Disease also acted as a learning opportunity for our students.

Student Olivia enjoys being on the Council and found the fundraiser to be a valuable experience.

“I have learned so much about Motor Neurone Disease. The fundraiser was a great way to spend time with the school community. The fun run got me out of my comfort zone and watching the teachers do the ice bucket challenge was funny. It's great that so many people contributed,” Olivia said.
